A psicanálise tem sido tradicionalmente uma prática insular, feita por analistas em seus consultórios, isolados de qualquer intrusão externa. Entretanto, nos últimos anos, tem surgido uma demanda por perspectivas psicanalíticas acerca da dinâmica subjacente de figuras políticas e fenômenos sociais. Os representantes da mídia têm procurado cada vez mais os psicanalistas para obter insights sobre certas patologias, como o transtorno de personalidade narcisista, a mentira compulsiva e o pensamento delirante, ao procurar compreender as maquinações irracionais de líderes autoritários. Aqui, não investigaremos a psique individual, mas, ao invés disso, a relação entre a psique e a cultura da população em geral (ou seja, a polis). Este artigo considerará a complexa dinâmica subjacente da influência hipnótica dos líderes e a criação de uma realidade alternativa.
